District Judge Facing DWI Only Hearing Civil Cases

A district court judge is back on the job today after being arrested and charged with DWI, but he won't rule on other DWI cases until his is heard first.

Chief Judge David Brantley told WITN that he has elected to keep Judge Lonnie Carraway off cases in Greene County and all criminal cases in the other the two counties he serves, which are Wayne and Lenoir, until March 30th. That's when Carraway will be a defendant his own case. This stems from a single car accident in Greene County Wednesday night.

Highway Patrol troopers say they suspect the judge was under the influence of prescription drugs and arrested for driving while impaired.

Chief Judge Brantley says Judge Carraway is presiding over civil cases for now, since there are only 6 judges in the three county district and one of them is currently on vacation.

Previous Story

A District Court judge for three counties in the east has been arrested and charged with DWI.

Wednesday night, troopers responded to a single vehicle accident in Greene County. Troopers say Judge Lonnie Carraway was driving on Charlie Waters Road around 8:30 p.m. when his car went off the road onto the right shoulder and struck a ditch.

The responding trooper suspected that Judge Carraway was under the influence of prescription drugs. Carraway was placed under arrest for driving while impared and taken to Snow Hill where he was evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert officer.

Blood from Judge Carraway was sent to the SBI Laboratory for analysis. The results of that blood test may not be available for several weeks.

Carraway was placed under an unsecured bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday, March 30 in Greene County.

Mr. Carraway is currently the residing District Court Judge for District 8A (Lenoir and Greene Counties) and District 8B (Wayne County).

I meet Lonnie doing time schools were being intergrated in Greene County over 45yrs ago and count him as a true friend, The fact that I am blk has never bothered Lonnie and the fact that he is wht has never bothered me. It amases me how many people will jump on a man when they think he is down, but not have the guts to go to his face if that have a problem. I don't know why we have a race problem, because I have encountered many blk and wht alike who enjoy this back stabbing and kicking of a man when they think he is doww. I don't know why so many have race problems because stupitity seems to be equal on both sides of tghe fence. Hang in there l=Lonnie my friend this is just the same type BS you have endured all your life. At least I know you are man enough to judge these back bitters fair as you always have when this is over. Your are will be sore from shaking the hands of all the scum who are going to say they believed in you all the time.I will be the first to tell you that they will be both blk and wht, some things never change. Forever yur real friend M.P.G.

Lonnie is an awesome person and as a nurse I can tell you that you can take Ambien (and many other similar drugs) for years and then one day have an adverse reaction with an increased half life. What I find horrifying is how pompous and self righteous most of you sound...guess I don't miss GC that much!!! For someone to come up as hard as Lonnie did and be the success he is gave many hope. I hope all you evil minded people who are enjoying Lonnie's misfortune get judged the way you are judging him....

My daughter had the same incident happen to her. Her life was put on hold for 16 months waiting for results from the SBI. Let's see if this "honorable" judge is forced to wait that long. I finally asked our lawyer to have the case heard because we needed closure. I know she is at fault and will suffer the consequences, but I will be curious to see how this plays out. Maybe when he gets his result back and if we ever get hers back we can compare notes. I only hope that justice will be served in the same manner as it is for just plain old regular people.

Lonnie Carroway should not be allowed back on the bench in any capcity until he has had a psychiatric evaluation. The PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION is needed due to the medication generic Ambiemn and the known side effects that can be expierinced by the user. Judge Brantley should immediately REQUIRE AN EVALUATION WITH A BLOOD TOXICOLOGY REPORT BEFORE HIS COLLEAGUE IS ALLOWED TO WEAR THE ROBE. I personally am amazed one has to even ask this of the 8th District.

I'll be beyond amazed if there is a conviction. Why should lonnie carraway be allowed to hear civil cases? It is well known and well reported the behavioural changes one experiences when taking the drug ambieum. Lonnie should undergo at once a PHYCHIATIRC EVALUATION to determine his FITNESS to even rule on civil cases. I think his fitness to rule is very much an issue here., perhaps it is negligent to allow him to wear the robe at this time?

That is crazy,he should not be doing any cases at all. However, have you ever had any dealings with the court system in Goldsboro or Brantley? That explains it. Brantley let a mother continue to have custody of her child when the child was put in ICU by her mother, dss was also involved because the child was being touched by mom's live-in's son. Brantley did nothing to protect this child, So it is really not shocking that he would let someone continue to sit on the bench with a court date for a dui, that is special treatment and abuse of his position.

He told the kinston free press he took AMBIEN . I wonder if his son is bragging at school that his dad still can get him out of trouble now. They alway say like father like son bet he isn't bragging now.He really shouldn't be doing any cases in the court system.

@ Peyton Place you hit the nail square on the head! Born and raised in GC still live there and the "click" in that town, well if people could only see their true colors! It's a small town people talk and you are for sure right with your comments about what they do and show up on Sunday teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir...I know him well and I know he is NOT perfect by no means but he has always been very good to my parents and family, it is a sad situation but he should be treated just like any other that gets a DUI, no special treatment!!
