Deadly Tornadoes Remembered Two Years Later

Two years ago today dozens of tornadoes ripped through Eastern Carolina, killing 12 people in Bertie County.

During that day at total of 30 tornadoes swept across the state, destroying or damaging thousands of homes and businesses. In all, 24 people were killed, while another 133 were injured by the storms.

The tornado that struck Bertie County first touched down south of Askewville and stayed on the ground for nearly 19 miles. The National Weather Service says it was an EF-3 tornado, with winds between 136 and 165 miles per hour.

While Bertie County had the most number of people killed, Greene County also received significant damage. Crews are still rebuilding Greene County Middle School, which was destroyed by a tornado.
