An unemployed man from Hookerton is accused of hitting a man in the head with a pair of post hole diggers and then stabbing him in the chest.
Ronald Taylor is being held with no bond on the murder charge.
Greene County deputies say around 6:10 p.m. Saturday, they got information about a fight between Church Street and Barbara Hooker Drive in Hookerton.
There they found Ebert Reyes lying face down on the ground. He died later at Vidant Medical Center, while the suspect was treated for minor injuries at Lenoir Memorial Hospital.
Deputies say the two men were fighting over money and Reyes cut Taylor with a kitchen knife and then retreated. They say the 52-year-old Taylor then chased the victim and hit him in the head, took his knife and then stabbed him.
Neighbors say the dispute was over money paid to cut Reyes' lawn.
An autopsy will be performed on Reyes' body to determine an exact cause of death.
