Construction Update On $12-Million Kinston Community Center

Construction is on schedule for a new community center in Kinston.

The Woodmen of the World Community Center in Kinston is scheduled to open its doors in August, with the indoor water park opening a bit earlier in June.

Kinston-Lenoir County Parks and Recreation director Bill Ellis says in addition to the water park, the community center will feature two gyms, an elevated walking track, a fitness center, banquet rooms and pools. He says everyone is looking forward to its opening. "It's something that all our citizens will be proud of. The building when you go in it is just going to be really awesome, and then the water adventure park is going to be the most handicapped-accessible park in America and we're really excited about that."

Woodmen of the World donated 7 million dollars towards the project. Ellis says the rest of the money for the more than 12 million dollar center came from city, county, state and private funds.

1st off, why are most of you people condemning the place before it even opens. I dare say most of the people talking trash up here, have no intentions of even attending. Its about time Kinston gets something nice and close to home for the residents. Kinston is a beautiful city that the rich have kept down for years and its about time it grows.

They should charge a larger membership fee. I have heard its going to be really cheap like next to nothing. I already know how it will turn out. I can see the east side of town getting my money out for it already.

Unfortunately, in the scheme of things, you're right For Sail...and I was born & raised (reared) in Kinston. Kinston stinks - it's the armpit of North Carolina. Yeah...I know...why don't I move.

The Kinston nature center is still looking good after all these years. I'm sure the city will not allow this new facility to be trashed and ruined. I'm sure they will have full time employees there.

First of all, this is mostly a Woodmen of the World facility and do not forget that, it will be run the same way the Woodmen has run their camp at Fort Barnwell. This will house East North Carolina Woodmen state offices, and will host East North Carolina District Conventions. The people of Kinston and Lenoir County this WILL NOT be a hide out for thugs.

Kevin I sure hope you're right. Kinston needs something GOOD......badly. This town is becoming a ghost town with all the crime. Kinston had more going for it 40 years ago than it does today. This is the kind of change I want for this town.

How about we give somthing a chance before we make it a negative situation. I look forward to this as a positive opportunity.

It would be nice, but not in Kinston. We all know that the "gangs" will take it over and decent people will not be able to go and enjoy.
