A church near Kinston will be assessing damage Friday after a fire that started in the attic.

Five fire departments from Lenoir County responded to the Armenia Christian Church on Highway 70 around 8:20 p.m. Thursday. By 10:30 p.m., the fire was completely extinguished.

"The fire departments did an excellent job getting to the fire," said Roger Dail with Lenoir County Emergency Services. "The fire was up high, in the attic, and they did a great job getting to it."

Dail says there is mostly smoke damage inside, and a little fire damage. He says the church has some cleaning to do, and will likely have to replace some things.

Dail said the fire appears to be electrical but is not related to the heating and cooling unit, as some speculated Thursday night.

Five fire departments battled the fire at the Armenia Christian Church at 1817 US Highway 70 east near Whaley Road, about two miles outside of Kinston.

Crews have been on the scene since just after 8:00 p.m.

We're told no one was injured and that the fire appears to have started in the heating/AC unit in the attic.

Two church members were there around 7:00 p.m. when they smelled smoke and called the fire department.

Most of the damage appears to be on the inside of the church.
