Troopers have charged a woman with driving while impaired after a deadly crash that took the life of her unborn baby, her 18-month-old daughter and a close friend.
Macie Mooring remains in Vidant Medical Center with a broken neck, broken back and two broken pelvic bones, according to her family.
Trooper C.B. Case says the DWI charge is not alcohol related. He said troopers found medicine on the woman which wasn't prescribed for her.
Killed were 20-year-old Erica Jones, and 18-month-old Kaleigh Cooper. Troopers say the two had been sitting in the passenger seats of the Mooring's Trailblazer on Highway 258, north of Snow Hill in Greene County. Mooring was nine months pregnant, and her family says the baby was still born after the crash.
Troopers say the SUV was northbound when it lost control in heavy rain, crossed the center line and was hit by an oncoming pickup truck.
The Highway Patrol says a woman, a toddler and an unborn child were lost in a horrific crash Monday on Highway 258 in Greene County.
Killed were 20-year-old Erica Jones, and 18-month-old Kaleigh Cooper. Troopers say the two had been sitting in the passenger seats of the Trailblazer, Cooper in a car seat, when the vehicle lost control, crossed the center line and was struck by a Ford pickup truck driven by Jerry Carraway.
Troopers say the driver of the Trailblazer, 19-year-old Macie Mooring, is in stable condition but lost a baby that she was 9-months pregnant with. The 18-month-old killed was was also her daughter.
Family members tell WITN News that Mooring suffered a broken back, broken neck and two broken pelvis bones. The teenager is now going through surgery to have pins put in her hip.
Suffering non-life threatening injuries were Jones's two children, 2-week-old Makenna Jones and 16-month-old Kailey Jones.
Wayne Community College says both Jones and Mooring attended school there. Jones had been in the adult high school program last year, while Mooring received her GED last September and was a scholar graduate.
Troopers say the SUV was northbound on Highway 258 when it lost control in heavy rain, crossed the center line and was hit by the oncoming truck.
The Highway Patrol says the accident is still under investigation.

The crash happened around 2:00 p.m. on Highway 258 near Newell Road, north of Snow Hill.
State troopers say a Chevy Trailblazer was northbound on Highway 258 when it lost control in heavy rain, crossed the center line and was hit by an oncoming Ford pickup truck.
There were five people in the Trailblazer, at least two of them children. The woman was the front seat passenger. Three others in that vehicle, along with the driver of the pickup truck were sent to Vidant Medical Center.
The highway was closed for about two hours because of the crash, but reopened shortly before 4:00 p.m.
