Veteran Firefighter Named Kinston Public Safety Director

A veteran firefighter has been tapped to become Kinston's next public safety director.

Bill Johnson, who is currently operations chief for the Fire & Rescue Division, has been promoted to lead the department.

Johnson began his career with Kinston in 1986. He was promoted to fire captain in 1988, battalion commander in 1992 and assistant chief in 1994. Johnson completed law enforcement training and was sworn in as a police officer in 2005.

Johnson replaced Greg Smith, who retired earlier this year.
