Leaking Dynamite Forces Lenoir County Evacuation

A Cherry Point bomb squad has disposed of old dynamite that was found in an abandoned home in Lenoir County.

Authorities say people cleaning out the home on Jonestown Road made the discovery around 9:30 a.m. Emergency Services Director Roger Dail estimates the 12 sticks of dynamite are between 20 and 30 years old.

He said neighbors were evacuated and the road shut down because nitroglycerin was leaking out of some of the sticks. The Explosive Ordinance Detail from Cherry Point burned off the dynamite.

The road reopened around 2:45 p.m.

Dail said it is not uncommon for old dynamite to be found in rural areas.

Food Hunter, I take my gun too when going to Food Lion or anywhere else. Not to hunt food but for all the predators lurking out there in the parking lots.

Yes, I use my gun every time I go to Food Lion. I haven't actually SEEN a "Food Lion", but you can never be too careful. Are there any "Food Hyenas" in this area?

Anonymous at 5:08PM, you gave the correct answer, yed farmers usually did keep some Dynamite on hand. It was much easier to get before 911.Of course all these dumb transplanted yankees on here wouldn't know anything about that. They're the same morons hollering about banning guns all the time.

it's very common for farmers to have dynamite for the purpose of removing stumps and such when clearing land. I've also seen it used to remove blockages in irrigation canals.

If you are a law abiding citizen and don't have a criminal record, you ought to have the right to keep some around the house if you want to.Oh thats right, its not a free country anymore, and getting less and less so all the time.
