School Bus & SUV Involved In Crash

Charges are still pending Wednesday morning for a driver who Highway Patrol says slammed into the back of the stopped school bus Tuesday afternoon.

21-year-old Jay Jackson had to be airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital following the crash in Deep Run. Hospital staff tell us, he's in serious condition.

PREVIOUS STORY:

Authorities say a school bus was rear-ended Tuesday afternoon in Lenoir County, with several students sent to the hospital.

The wreck happened around 3:30 p.m. on Highway 11 South in Deep Run.

State troopers say bus number 116 from Woodington Middle School was stopped and letting a student off when an SUV struck the bus from behind. The driver of that SUV, 21 year-old Jay Jackson, was trapped in the vehicle for about 40 minutes. The SUV driver was airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Thirty-five students were on the bus, and seven of those, along with the bus driver, were transported to Lenoir Memorial Hospital for observation.

Highway 11 was shut down for over an hour because of the crash.

Troopers say charges are pending against the SUV driver.

I also know the young man that was driving the SUV involved in this terrible accident. He is a very good friend of my son. To "concerned parent" who said "I do not understand how you possibly not see a stopped school bus"...Has anyone said that he did not see the bus?? The Jay I know is a very responsible, hard-working, kind and considerate young man. I'm sure that he saw the bus and then something happened that rendered him incapable of controlling his vehicle. This is the only explanation that sounds reasonable to me. I am a USPS rural carrier. I see all kinds of drivers every day. Just because someone rear-ends another vehicle does not automatically make that person the "guilty" one. Do not be so quick to judge. I and my son will continue to pray daily for God's healing of this wonderful young man and for God's strength for his mother and the rest of his family.

Just on the short side of stuff....it's not always the driver's fault when someone is hit from behind.

thanks for your concern "Concerned Parnet" though the excess remark about you dont see how this could have happened was not needed. It seems to me that your comment was an inferece that it was itnertional or a act of studidity... this most certainly was not the case. I can also asure you that it was not the drivers intention to harm any students in the accident, had it been it would not have been nessary to injur himself. Thank you for you educational input.

First, I'm glad that no one on the bus was seriously injured. I happen to personally know the driver of the SUV, and he is an excellent driver. I have rode with him on many occasions, and he is very responsible. People should be less hasty to judge, and be more ready to lift up prayers for those who need it. It's easy to criticize the mistakes of others, but it's not so easy to thank God for his blessings, such as the fact that nobody was killed in the accident. God is good, Jay is in all of our prayers around here. Hope he is better soon.
