Three Eastern Carolina counties are listed by AAA Carolinas as the most dangerous counties when it comes to traffic fatalities.
The AAA says Hertford and Tyrrell rank number one and two, while Lenoir County hits the list at number 5. The data is from 2008, which is the latest year that statistics are available.
The automobile club says rural roads are generally narrow, have more curves and have lower shoulders...all leading to more deadly crashes.
Pitt County was the most dangerous for having a traffic collision in 2008. It logged 2% of all crashes in the state, while only accounting for 1.3% of vehicle miles traveled.
There is some good news in the report. AAA Carolinas says traffic deaths dropped by 15 percent in 2008, the first time the state has had less than 1,500 traffic fatalities since 1998.
