Alex White Returns To ENC As A Kinston Indian

Kinston, NC – The 2010 Kinston Indians roster is highlighted by the homecoming of Greenville, N.C., native Alex White. White, a right-handed pitcher, starred at D.H. Conley High School in Greenville before playing collegiately for three seasons at The University of North Carolina. He was selected by Cleveland with the 15th overall pick in the 2009 draft. Baseball America rates White as the No. 9 prospect in the organization.

White was named third-team All-American as a sophomore at UNC, and earned All-ACC honors in his sophomore and junior seasons. In his Tar Heels career, White was 27-14 with a 3.96 ERA and finished in the top 10 in school history in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts. In high school, White helped D.H. Conley win back-to-back state titles in 2005 and 2006, and was named MVP of the 2006 state tournament.

Kinston’s roster includes four more scheduled starting pitchers and two position players that Baseball America ranks among the top 25 prospects in the Indians organization. Left-hander Nick Hagadone, the third-ranked prospect and top pitcher, was acquired from Boston in the Victor Martinez trade last July. Hagadone came back from Tommy John surgery last season to start 17 games and made two starts for Kinston at the end of the season. Drafted by Boston with their first round supplemental pick in 2007, Hagadone has a 2.16 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 79 career innings pitched.

T.J. House, a lefty, is Cleveland’s 12th-ranked prospect and gets the promotion to Kinston from Class A Lake County, where he had a record of 6-11 with a 3.15 ERA in 26 starts last season. The 20-year-old was drafted by Cleveland out of high school in the 16th round of the 2008 draft.

Kelvin De La Cruz, another southpaw and the Indians No. 13 prospect, returns to Kinston after a very promising start to the 2009 season with the K-Tribe ended abruptly when a strained ligament in his elbow sidelined him for most of the season. He started the season 2-0 and allowed just two runs while striking out 19 batters in 12 innings of work prior to the injury.

Right-hander Alexander Perez re-joins Kinston after being promoted from Lake County last July. The 20th-ranked Indians prospect, Perez made a strong showing in eight appearances with the K-Tribe in 2009, going 1-2 with a 2.87 ERA and 31 strikeouts despite being limited by a sore shoulder late in the season.

Leading the K-Tribe’s position players is second baseman Jason Kipnis, Cleveland’s second round pick in 2009 and No. 10 prospect. Kipnis was the 2009 Pac-10 Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-American as a junior at Arizona State. Kipnis hit .306 in 29 games with Short Season-A Mahoning Valley last season. Outfielder Abner Abreu moves up to Kinston from Lake County, where he hit .305 with 7 homers and 30 RBI before a dislocated shoulder ended his season in June. Signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2006, Abreu is Cleveland’s 23rd-ranked prospect.

Outfielder Lucas Montero leads a group of 13 more players who return after spending at least part of the 2009 season with Kinston. Montero batted .260 last season; leading the K-Tribe with nine triples and finishing fifth on the team with 39 RBI. Other returning K-Tribers that spent time with the 2009 Indians include: Steve Smith, David Roberts, Nate Recknagel, Doug Pickens, Bryce Stowell, Richard Martinez, Santo Frias, Cristo Arnal, Roman Pena, Ronald Rivas, Travis Turek and Joey Mahalic.
