Driver Passes Out, Crashes & Dies

A Kinston man died Wednesday when he passed out behind the wheel and slammed into some pine trees.

Troopers say 55 year-old Eldridge Kornegay Junior was driving down Highway 11 South near Green Haynes Road in Lenoir County when he lost consciousness and crashed.

Highway patrol says it is waiting for word from the medical examiner since Kornegay didn't have any visible injuries from the crash.

Back in the late 70s, I helped an acquaintance land a delivery job. Within 3 weeks he wrecked his truck. I found out he had been popping pills and indulging in other drugs. Shortly after, I heard his mother say, "All he wants to do with his life is see how many drugs he can get in his body." It didn't help my reputation and I felt bad about the whole thing. I haven't seen that guy since. I think he died. ...Of course, this may have been a case of sleep apnea which has just recently been identified as a culprit in many sleeping driver incidents. I guess we'll never know.

I feel sorry for his family. I am also glad no one else got hurt.
