Deputy Injured In Shootout Glad To Be Back At Work

A deputy sheriff who lost his partner and was wounded himself in a shootout is glad to be back at work again.

Lenoir County Deputy Ryan Dawson spoke with reporters Thursday morning, three months and one day after the tragedy in Tick Bite. Dawson said he's "just thankful to still be here. It's what we do each day."

Dawson was wounded in the neck, while Deputy Allen Pearson died after being shot in the shoulder. Both were members of the department's Special Response Team. Deputies shot and killed gunman Doug Phillips by return gunfire.

Dawson was released from Pitt County Memorial Hospital just days after the shooting and was able to attend his partner's funeral.

He says he is taking his time getting back into activities with the Special Response Team.

It occurs to me that there are plenty of folks out there that just hate law officers. In fact, many of them chime in with their anti-police comments here on WITN's page. But I'd be willing to bet that exactly NONE of them would have the guts to tackle the job themselves. Deputy Dawson, sincere condolences to you and your partner's family, and God bless you all.

The service that this fellow officer rendered on April 8, 2009 to the citizens of Lenoir County was priceless. Even after being seriously wounded himself, his initial response was to render aid to his fallen partner. There are hundreds of us that pin on a badge each day to "protect and serve", however, Detective Dawson's valor during this incident reached far above that!! Good to have you back my fellow brother...God Speed to you Allen!!
