Autopsy Shows Armored Vest Failed To Stop Bullet That Killed Deputy

An autopsy shows a Lenoir County deputy sheriff, killed in a shootout three months ago, died after his armored vest did not stop a bullet from a high-powered rifle.

Deputy Allen Pearson was shot when an armed man, who was a suspect in a woman's death, opened fire in Tick Bite.

The autopsy, which was obtained by WITN News, says the bullet entered the deputy's left shoulder and caused fatal damage in his chest.

The report from the Brody School of Medicine says "examination of the clothing demonstrated a defect of the shoulder plate of the deputy's tactical vest." But Major Chris Hill says that defect was caused by the bullet. He says the armored vest Pearson was wearing was less than five years old.

Deputy Ryan Dawson was also injured in the shooting, and he returned to work July 1st. Gunman Clarence Douglas Phillips was killed by return gunfire.

We all have the freedom of speech which we have all shared here. In memory of Allen, let us all end the arguement/discussion or whatever you want to call it about the autopsy being on the news and the vest that he wore. What's done is done and there's nothing we can do to change it. If anyone has any comments that are in memory of Allen please share but let's all stop the discussion over trivial matters when what really matters is that a young man lost his life and people are hurting. To Katherine, Mr. Rickie, and the entire family, you are constantly in my thoughts and prayers.

Just leave this jerk alone. He obviously takes great pleasure in stirring the pot and hurting peoples feelings. The less we respond to Reality Check, the less his/her arrogance/ignorance will be able to prevail. We all know the truth, that Allen Pearson is a hero. That Allen Pearson was a great person. Allen Pearson loved his wife more than anyone knew, and he loved his family too. He loved his God and his Savior, and is basking in His light as this is being typed. So, let us all just not respond to this person. He'll never get the best of us.

That's right. Pray all you want. It won't change the way I think.

As far as the vest, there was nothing wrong with it. Any vest would not be able to stop a high powered rifle from five feet away. Reality Check... I am continuing to pray for you. I am Allen's widow's brother-in-law. All that people are asking you to do is be respectful. If you can't do that, you need to move on to something else. Obviously, you have no respect for law enforcement or anyone else for that matter.

Additionally, Ms. Winter, take a lesson in English 101 or Basic Writing Skills. Your rambling tirade is a little hard to comprehend. I am exercising my right to free speech as you do. It seems you have a problem with reality, as well. The sooner you look at life as a realist, the easier things become.

It was not the vest that killed Allen, it was the man who pulled the trigger. The media needs to back off and give the family time to mourn. The person at fault for our fallen brother is doing his time in hell. Be respectful WITN!!!!

I agree with Wolfgang 100%. No body armor will stop a direct shot from any high powered firearm. Maybe someday there will be a lightweight body armor that will work.
