Baseball Team Feeling The Effects Of Two Tragic Deaths

The death of Lenoir County deputy Allen Pearson was the first of two tragic losses last week now impacting one area high school baseball team.

Monday afternoon members of the North Lenoir baseball team took to the field in Greenville with heavy hearts.

Over the weekend the team mourned the loss of Pearson, who coached J.V. baseball at the school -- and the sudden death of John Alphin, who lead the team to a state championship last year. The 19 year-old died when his vehicle flipped several times Friday afternoon in Greene County.

North Lenoir coach Jim Montague says the team put Aplhin's number three and his initials on their caps to also remember him as they try to make sense of his death. "They're still kids, and they're asking the questions why?, why? why? But there's a big support group helping within the community but there's a big support group helping these kids.".

Alphin was laid to rest on Sunday and his family asked that memorials be sent to North Lenoir High School for a scholarship in his name.

Under these circumstances, we all have asked why? But we have to believe and understand that our death is written in the book of life. Under these circumstances, and with your heavy hearts this was the way death happened for your love ones. How will you die? That's why we are told in the living word to live life "one day at a time." The little things do count. To Love and to be loved. Godspeed my friends.
