Sex offenders convicted of rape and indecent liberties with children are among the dozens and dozens of registered sex offenders in eastern Carolina who's whereabouts are unknown.
All sex offenders are required by law to register where they live. Those addresses are available for anyone to check on the state's sex offender registry.
The state's registry currently shows law enforcement unable to verify addresses for 55 sex offenders in eastern Carolina. Twenty of those are in Wayne County.
Wayne County Sheriff Carey Winders says keeping up with where sex offenders live all gets down to manpower. He compared it to the probation and parole system, currently under fire after a report on the News & Observer discovered since the start of 2000, 580 offenders have killed while on probation. Probation officers can't locate nearly 14,000 criminals.
Winders say one possible solution that has been talked about before for sex offenders is ankle bracelets, kind of like GPS to track them. Winders says he thinks that may be appropriate for some, but not all sex offenders. Other counties like Beaufort go to a sex offenders residence four times a year to make sure they're still there. That's in addition to certified letters the state sends out twice a year.
