Dozens off people were evacuated from a Lenoir County mobile home park. In all between 70 and 80 people along Gulick Drive outside of Kinston were awakened Wednesday night.
Flooding in a mobile home park caused the evacuations around 11 p.m. Gulick Drive is off of Highway 11 South near the intersection with Highways 55 and 70, south of Skinner Bypass.
The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office says the evacuations were voluntary. The owner of the mobile home park says some people left as about a foot of standing water piled up around the mobile homes. He said there did not appear to be any damage inside the homes. The owner blamed the standing water on a drainage ditch that backed up in the low-lying area. He also said he has not seen this much water there since Hurricane Floyd in 1999.
Authorities say the fire department and Lenoir County Emergency Management helped with the voluntary evacuation.
