Global Transpark Runway Improvements

More money is headed to the Global Transpark in Kinston for runway improvements.

Democrat Congressman G.K. Butterfield visited to the Global Transpark Center of Excellence in Kinston to make the funding announcement for the Kinston Regional Airport, as well as to tour the facility.

Over The Past Two Years, congressman Butterfield says one million dollars in federal funding has been appropriated for a landing strip at the airport.

    Have you all been hiding under a rock? Over 2900 jobs have been announced in Lenoir County in the last two years, with over 1000 of them announced by Spirit AeroSystems at the Global TransPark! Regardless of where the money is coming from, this is an investment that is paying off. Spirit AeroSystems alone is investing over $570 million. I'd say that's a pretty good return on what we've invested as a state.

    The GTP located at the confulence of Lenoir and Greene Counties doesn't enjoy that same advantage. One of the most glaring deficiencies is the lack of an interstate highway. the nearest one, interstate 795, is more than twenty miles away. To reach it, one must travel the dreadful highway 70 with it's all to numerous stoplights and intersections. Of course some of this will be mitigated when the Goldsboro bypass is completed sometime around 2030 if funding continues. There have indeed been beneficaries of the GTP. The "small staff" have enjoyed not so small salaries. However, the real beneficaries are those visionaries most of whom work mainly behind the scene to promote and profit from the GTP. Consider the land speculators, the bankers and others(often these are one in the same) who really profit from the GTP and the taxpayer's largess. Look to political contributors to get an idea if you need help here. The GTP is a boondoggle much more akin to Soul City than the RTP.

    If memory serves me correctly, at ground breaking, the GTP was touted as an economic panacea predicted to produce upwards of 50,000 high paying jobs. This was the "just-in-time manfacturing" phase. Then it morphed into the "possibly an agricultural distribution point" phase. Then came the "Boeing" phase with it's whipping of the chamber of commerce and economic development types into a frothy frenzy. Of course,Boeing never had any intention of abandoning the massive investment it has in Washington. The GTP was used merely as a bargining chip to wrest concessions from Washington. Now we have Spirit AeroSystems and the "aerospace" phase. More than 15 years and over $250,000,000 in taxpayer money has produced less than 500 jobs. That's more than $500,000 per job not counting the associated opportunity costs. The RTP and the GTP isn't an apples to apples comparison. The RTP had the basic rule of real estate working in it's favor-location, location,location.

    Isn't Butterfield the same NC representative that accepted campaign funding from Rangle and refuses to give it back? Kinda shows his ethics, doesn't it? I cannot wait until November when I can help get him out of office.

    I get to kinston airport occasionly, I see some cars around spirit, but I just wonder how much tax money it takes to keep them going verses what spirit inputs back into the local economy? I bet it still isn't a winner..

    It seems to me that we should be supporting the Global TransPark at the moment, and certainly not criticizing it. For the last 10 years, a small staff has been running the place on a limited budget and the situation has steadily improved. Now, with the acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems as an anchor tenant, the GTP is attracting widespread attention as a possible aerospace manufacturing center. It makes no sense to complain about the GTP's lengthy effort to succeed; the Research Triangle also struggled for many years before turning the corner. I suggest that we put away all the whining and get behind the GTP, not in front of it.

    When I read the comments from the likes of Scott, Dave and Chuck, I wonder where they've been? With the arrival of Spirit and other aerospace companies, the GTP offers more promise than anything to hit ENC in decades. Get with the program, folks.

    I've got to agree with Dave, GTP has done nothing for this area but cost it money. If it was bringing jobs in that would be one thing but it has done nothing. Even before the economic problems it had been no help to the area as far as jobs go.

    Over the last 10 - 15 Years, there have been millions and millions heaped upon even more of the millions that have been wasted at the airport in kinston to try to make it viable. Every year we hear about how if we just get this hanger built or if we can get that railroad track into the airport all of a sudden, it's gonna be a money maker. So now if we just can just get the runway extension . . . Now this bad-boy is going to bring in the revenue. I bet the only money-makers are the contractors and the politicians.

    More continued waste. The GTP has been a money pit for over a decade now and they keep throwing money at it like it is something positive. Go look at the Greenville airport and the money they are wasting on that. You can go out there most anytime and the entire airport, except for 2-3 staff, is EMPTY. The place was completely rebuilt in 1999 after the flood and they are now increasing the size by 4. Millions of wasted dollars for ZERO gain.
