Grandparents of a two week old baby who was seriously injured this weekend say the girl is having seizures in the hospital.

The baby's father, Michael Banks, is charged with attempted first degree murder and child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

Edgecombe County deputies say Banks became angry with the child's mother Saturday in their Pinetops home and slammed the baby on the bed.

Some time later, the child became unresponsive and lethargic, and was transported to the Vidant Edgecombe Emergency Room, who then contacted law enforcement.

Grandparents tell us they have been able to visit little Violet at the hospital. They say the baby is having seizures, and they don't yet know if she will have any permanent injuries. The grandparents say Banks admitted at the hospital that he injured his daughter.

The baby's twin brother was not injured and remains at the home.

Medical testing revealed Violet had multiple bruises on her face and neck, and the child's brain had been bleeding in several locations.

Officials say the injuries were consistent with a child that has been shaken.

Banks is in jail under a $885,000 bond. Records show the 21-year-old also has pending misdemeanor drug possession charges.
