Police Confirm Identity Of Driver After Tractor Trailer Plunges Into Creek

Police have confirmed the identity of a trucker killed Monday afternoon when his big rig ended up in a Rocky Mount creek.

David Stone of Rocky Mount was killed in the 1:40 p.m. accident on Highway 301.

Police say the 71-year-old Stone was driving the 18-wheeler when it and another vehicle were involved in the crash. The tractor trailer plowed through a concrete bridge railing and landed in Stoney Creek.

The man's body was later recovered and the tractor trailer was removed around 10:30 p.m.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident and one lane of the highway remains closed.

Family members of a man who was missing after his tractor trailer plowed through a bridge railing and into Stoney Creek in Rocky Mount, tell WITN his body has been recovered.

The accident took out part of a bridge and has shut down part of U.S. 301 in Rocky Mount.

Police say it happened around 1:40 p.m. and the northbound lanes of U.S. 301 at Wesleyan Boulevard are shut down.

The front of the tractor trailer landed in Stoney Creek and the fire department's swift water rescue team are attempting to find the driver.

Family members identify the driver as 72-year-old David Stone who has been a truck driver his entire life.
