Nash County Boy Home After Wild Pitch Nearly Killed Him

An 11-year-old Nash County boy nearly killed by a wild pitch as he sat outside a baseball dugout has returned home after nearly a month in the hospital.

The Rocky Mount Telegram reports a crowd of roughly 100 people welcomed Lee Winstead home Friday. The sixth-grader was struck by a baseball while sitting on a five-gallon bucket at Grover Lucas Park. The resulting blood clot in his brain required an operation to relieve swelling. He was in intensive care for two weeks.

People lined the driveway of his home carrying posters and waving pompoms. A fire truck was parked out front, and a local pizza restaurant delivered pizza for all.

Lee's 19-year-old sister Jessica Smith says her brother's vision is still blurred, but he can walk and talk again.
