Mayor Indicted For Shopping, Dining On Town's Credit Card

An Eastern Carolina mayor has been formally indicted on charges she racked up more than $8,000 in dining and shopping bills and put them on the town's credit card.

Princeville Mayor Priscilla Everette-Oates is now facing an indictment constructed of 17 charges of embezzlement by public official.

The charges came after a State Auditor's report that said between August of 2010 and July of this year, the mayor swiped the town's credit card 22 times for meals at Madison Steak and Seafood which totaled $1,255, along with two shopping trips to Bed, Bath, and Beyond which added up to $222.

Auditors took a look at the town's finances after the books were handed over to the Local Government Commission, and that is when a discrepancy came to light.

The mayor issued a written statement to reporters after the state auditor's findings came out, which noted she traveled extensively to meet with officials, to help bring opportunity to Princeville. The same statement said that time away from her family and business was uncompensated.

The mayor turned herself in Wednesday morning and was released on a $7,500 unsecured bond.
