Mail will no longer be processed in Eastern Carolina as the U.S. Postal Service says it's closing down mail centers in Kinston and Rocky Mount, moving that work to Raleigh.
Some 100 people work at the downtown Kinston facility that processes and distributes mail for a large part of Eastern Carolina. For more than a year the Postal Service has been studying what do to with the Kinston center. It says since 2006, first class mail volume has dropped and it needed to reduce costs.
The Postal Service also announced it will close a processing center in Fayetteville, as well. Retail units, business mail entry units and the vehicle maintenance facilities at Kinston and Rocky Mount will not be affected at this time, according to a news release.
