Hurricane Irene Brings Back Bad Memories For Some

As Hurricane Irene gets closer and closer to our coast some folks in Princeville, Edgecombe County can't help but get nervous.

Many remember what happened all too well in Princeville after Hurricane Floyd back in 1999....basically the entire town was underwater.

Many were forced to leave the area. Within the past few years some have moved back and buildings have been rebuilt. But with the threat of Irene some people say it brings back memories.

Town officials met Wednesday to set up a contingency plan just in case Hurricane Irene does cause problems.

Princeville was not the only place that was flooded during Floyd. I'm sure a lot of people are nervous.

WITN - this should not be a story. this storm is nothing like Floyd. Dennis had already soaked us in the previous weeks and then Floyd put us over the top. We have been in a drought this year, so except for a few areas having a quick flash flood due to heavy rain, which is not uncommon inland during a huricane, I don't think we have to worry about Princeville washing away. Use your common sense people. If you are in a area prone to flood damage, go to a safe area till it's safe to return.

No comparison at all. This storm will move through quickly so there won't be anything like the inland rainwater flooding of Floyd.

Floyd was a bit different. I worked in Tarboro at the EOC & rescue. The storms that preceeded Floyd is what initialized the damage. We have had some heavy rains to the west of us, but hopefully this Irene thing will just move on.
