Hundreds of law enforcement officers from across the country are paid their final respects Wednesday morning to a state trooper who was killed Saturday.
Trooper Gene DeMuth's funeral was at Englewood Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. He was buried at Red Oak Cemetery.
The trooper was killed Saturday morning trying to put out stop sticks during the chase for Christopher Rodgers in Nash County, but authorities say Rodgers hit and killed DeMuth. He has been charged with murder.
DeMuth leaves behind his wife, Michelle and son, Trevor. He was a U.S. Marine from 1988 to 1992. In 1994, he joined the Wilson County Sheriff's Office, then worked for the Edgecombe County Sheriff's Office from 1998 to 2000. That's when DeMuth began working for the North Carolina DMV and then transferred to the Highway Patrol.
