NEW INFO: Rocky Mount Man Killed In Wreck

Highway Patrol says a Rocky Mount man was killed in a head-on collision Friday afternoon in Nash County.

It happened around 2:40 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 301 North of Battleboro when a pickup truck and a tractor trailer cab collided.

Troopers say the driver of the pickup truck, 77-year-old Willie Banks, was traveling south when he crossed over the center line, sideswiped another pickup and then collided with the tractor-trailer. Troopers say he was killed instantly.

Highway 301 was shut down in both directions for several hours.

Troopers say they don't know yet why Banks crossed over the center line.

My sincere condolences to these people, who lost their lives. It's very sad, but more so, at this time of year. They won't have Christmas with their loved ones. Let's think about that, and just offer our prayers.

Why are you blaming WITN for reporting an accident? At least they didn't report it as "dead on" instead of "head on". Do you know the facts to this Accident? Bet you never have had a traffic violation in your entire life, and if you ever were in an Accident; it wasn't your fault! Respect the people involved in the accident, bless the families that have to go on without their loved ones! Leave the statics out of the comments and concentrate on what really matters! Accidents do happen!

Terrible time of year for this. God bless all involved. Seemed like everyone in this town lost sight of safety on T-giving weekend. Been noticing lots of accidents here recently.

Nice post, and I agree. I would have been bashed in my driver's door today, inside town limits, because someone ran the red light. My light turned green, but I hesitated for some reason, and sure enough a large truck ran through the red light. I was confused because my light turned green and the other cars had stopped, but I noticed that one vehicle barreling through; 'There but for the Grace of God, Go I'. Thank You Lord.

Glad you made it home to your family. That type of accident in the driver's door is rarely one to walk away from, seat belt or not.

How is a dead on collision an "accident", WITN? At least one person is at fault for being on the wrong side of the road so there is nothing accidental about that. It is a motor vehicle collision not an accident. MV collisions kill about 16,000 people per year in the US and safety needs to be addressed and having the news media refer to them as "accidents" is very irresponsible.

It would be nice if people would find more important things to take issue with. This could, indeed, be an accident if a deer blind-sided the person who crossed the yellow line. Or, if they had a tire blow out. Prayers out to the deceased, injured, and loved ones touched by this tragedy.

This elderly man might of had a heart attack prior to crossing the center line, which would bring educated people to believe that it was in fact an "ACCIDENT".
