A father and his daughter died in a house fire outside of Fountain this morning. This after the daughter rescued her mother and went back inside for her father.
Edgecombe County Sheriff James Knight tells WITN News that the fire started at the home on the corner of Old Market and Turnage roads around 11:00 a.m.
Knight says a couple, who are in their 60s, lived in the home, and investigators believe the fire began as one of them was cleaning out ashes in a wood stove.
The couple's daughter lives nearby and heard about her parent's home on fire and rushed there to assist. Knight says the daughter was able to get her mother safely out, and went back inside for her father. The sheriff says it appears both were overcome by the smoke and didn't make it out.
The victims have been identified the victims as 67-year-old Jimmie Harris, and 48-year-old Barbara Joiner Harris. Family members said the man was a diabetic who had lost his eyesight.
Relatives say officials told them the roof and insulation fell on the two and they weren't able to escape the house.
The sheriff says there is no criminal investigation, but the SBI will be called in to confirm what they believe happened.
