NEW INFO: DOT Worker Suspended After Hitting Bridge Overpass

A D.O.T. worker was suspended after his truck caused several hundred thousand dollars in damage to a bridge overpass here in Eastern Carolina.

The accident happened May 4th at the Highway 258 exit on U.S. 64 outside of Tarboro when the D.O.T. truck, carrying an excavator, caused a big hole in an overpass girder. That concrete girder and bridge deck will have to be replaced.

The D.O.T. says the worker, Joe Hawkins, was given a two week suspension without pay. The Highway Patrol ticketed the employee for driving while exceeding safe load height. Troopers say the clearance was 17 feet high, while loads in the state are not supposed to be over 13 feet 6 inches.

Cost of the repair is estimated at between $200,000 and $300,000. A D.O.T. spokeswoman says the overpass remains closed and they now expect work to be completed July 27th, weather permitting.
