"Wishbone" The Dog To The Rescue In Hospital Bed Bug Fight

Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro says it's gone above and beyond to ensure bed bugs won't be back, even calling in a specially trained dog to sniff the entire second floor for the bugs, before declaring they were gone for the second time.

Vidant Edgecombe's president, Wick Baker, says the problem is confined to a second story room at the hospital. He says a patient first complained of bed bug bites on February 21st. He says she was moved to another room, and the hospital immediately followed its bed bug infection control policy and called a company to treat the room, which remained closed for 12 days. He says the room reopened last week, and then another patient reported being bitten by bed bugs there on Thursday. Baker says the room was treated again and still remains closed at this time.

Baker says a specially trained dog was called in to sniff for the bugs over the weekend. "We had a dog, his name is Wishbone, go through every space in every room on the second floor and that was what was recommended by our vendor."

Aside from calling in professionals to get rid of the bugs, Baker says staff was re-educated last week about proper linen handling techniques and things to look out for that could point to bed bugs.

Baker says there's no way to tell how the bugs got into the hospital, since they can be carried by people and their belongings.

Is that an official "Lab" report or a new "doggone" diagnosis?

Cleanliness or sanitation has nothing to do with the spread or sustanence of bed bugs. If the place is cluttered it does make treatment more difficult. If you don't understand then just don't comment.

The litle buggers were brought down here by Yankees. Mostly from New York City. Remember last year the little critters were showing up everywhere. Camp Lejeune had them in the barracks. Marines go home on regular and long weekends and bring the little critters back down with them. This was last year, so at least Camp Lejeune is critter free. Well, not exactly there is still the two legged critters roaming about.
