Rocky Mount Coach Cleared Of Charges After Spanking Player

A former Rocky Mount recreational league football coach has been cleared of assault charges related to spanking a 12-year-old player on the practice field.

A North Carolina judge ruled Friday that there was insufficient evidence to find 49-year-old Dee Whitley guilty of criminal charges.

Whitley resigned as a volunteer coach but the boy's mother pressed charges.

Whitley testified he disciplined the boy because of a blatant late hit against another player during an August practice. Whitley said he should have handled the situation better.

Rocky Mount City Councilman Andre Knight said he is disappointed with the ruling and worries race may have played a role in the incident. Whitley and the boy who was tackled are white; the boy who was disciplined is black.

    C. Dancy...are you under age 20? Or are you just uneducated? People of color have full control of Zimbabwe (Robert Mugabe). Why don't you move over there...I'm sure you'd love it over there...away from all this white rule and white bias.

Comments like the one from C. Dancy is why there is racial tension. It doesn't matter what color a person is....if what they do is wrong....then it is wrong. Andre Knight uses race as an excuse and not the facts or issue of a situation. Rocky Mount and any other city does not need trouble makers like Andre Knight.....they need problem solvers. and if he is a Rev....well he has disgraced it's meaning. May God bless you C. Dancy and help you and others who think like you that the city cannot and will not go forward with your kind of thinking and actions.

C Dancy, we are ALL people of color. Rev. Knight is just trying to start something. Tell Rev. Knight to stop accusing and start coming up with solutions. Changing the rules so that the crime in RM isn't reported isn't solving anything. Maybe if he went out into the community and tried to reach these people. Oh no, that's too much to ask of Rev. Knight, he might would have to step down off of his bully pulpit. He knows that you don't make headlines by actually trying to do something to help the situation. You only make the news if you sit back and make false allegations. Now that I think of it, Rev. Knight reminds me of another famous Rev. that I haven't heard much about lately, atleast since he falsely accused the Duke Lacrosse team. Hmm, what was his name? It's right on the tip of my tongue. Help me out C Dancy. I am sure you know who I am talking about.

Rev Andre Knight is doing what should have been done 40 years ago in Rocky Mount. He is righting wrongs and finally giving people of color a voice in government.

The City of Rocky Mount needs to fire Andre Knight for such a comment. There should not be any racists involved with government whatsoever. This is the same guy who said too much crime is being reported as if otherwise he would want it covered. If I was living in Rocky Mount (thank God I don't live in that hole) I would be calling for his resignation. After all this is called the city on the lowlife thugs and shootings.

To Old School, if this coach has a histor of spanking players then I would say thats just the way he handles things. But we both know that you can't put your hands on players at all. This is just a perfect example on how eastern NC deals with things as a whole. The kid should have been benched for the late hit and not spanked. I am a firm believer in spanking kids when they are wrong but let it be your own kids and not someone elses. Has this coach ever spanked any other kid!?
