FIRST ON WITN: Former Cops Accused Of Stealing Cocaine, Cash

Another former Rocky Mount cop has been indicted for tampering with evidence. WITN News has learned the former sergeant is accused of stealing cocaine that was being kept as evidence.

Christopher Johnson, a former sergeant in the administrative services division, turned himself in Tuesday after the indictment.

A grand jury indicted him for obstruction of justice and altering, destroying, or stealing criminal evidence.

The indictment says Johnson stole cocaine that was in police evidence on three different occasions. Those were on December 6, 2008, February 20th and on March 26th.

Johnson was an officer from June 2002 until he resigned May 13th. Police say they received information of police misconduct back in May which led to an internal personnel investigation of Johnson. As the information was gathered, the department also decided to conduct a separate criminal investigation.

In April former officer Korrin Lofton was also indicted for altering, destroying or stealing criminal evidence. WITN News has learned that former officer is accused of stealing approximately $4,000 in cash that was being kept as evidence.

Lofton was fired back in December after spending three years on the force.

At the time of his arrest, police would only say that they received allegations of police misconduct in November and that led to an internal investigation.

Chief John Manley would not grant WITN an on-camera interview Wednesday, but through a spokesman answered several questions in writing about the indictments.

We asked the chief whether he is concerned that the public may lose faith in the department with the arrests. "This investigation shows that we police ourselves professionally and will take appropriate steps to include criminal charges if evidence is found to support it. We adhere to our core values of Integrity, Professionalism, Respect and Fairness," responded Chief Manley.

Manley tells WITN that he is "absolutely certain" there are no others involved.

If you don't like Rocky Mt., then move! What ever happened to people are innocent until proven guilty, and it also helps when the "media" gets the facts correct, which in this case they are NOT. Shame on WITN for defaming this man.If I were him I would sue!

You know this is a sad case when police officers have to resort to this and they want respect please give me a break.I keep telling folks that uniform they wear don't mean anything these days.I know their are some good cops out there, but you also have your bad ones.If they are not making enough money on the force they should take on a part-time job.Now he looks real stupid right now.

This type of thing goes on in law enforcement offices everywhere. It's becoming a stiuation where more cops are crooked than straight. I used to see it on a regular basis when I was a close accuantance of several officers/deputies.
