Police: Man Dies After Rocky Mount Home Invasion

A man died from a heart attack after a home invasion in Rocky Mount, according to police.

Alton Harper, age 57, and Amy Harper, age 35, were held up at gunpoint in their home on Crepe Myrtle Street early Friday morning.

Police say Amy heard glass breaking, went to investigate and saw a man pointing a gun at her father.

She told police the gunman then pointed the gun at her, demanding money.

Amy told police she gave him a lock box, and the gunman ran out.

Police say her dad, Alton, ran out of the house after him but was unable to locate him.

While reporting the crime, Alton fell to the floor suffering from a heart attack. Police say EMS transported Alton to the hospital where he died.

The suspect is still on the loose.

i would have had a heart attack when i saw his head roll across my floor. Something needs to be done so people can protect themselves in their home. My prayers goes out to the family of that poor man.

A: I tell you what's happening in Rocky Mount. It's the same thing going on all around us. The devil is running amock in our young peoples lives. Drugs, etc. It saddens me to hear bad new's everyday. We've even have had 3 suicides in our part of the state (within about a 30 mile radius) just this week. A 35 year old, a 32 year old, and a 13 year old. It's just plain sad....

Mad person ... NC law states that if the danger has passed (meaning the criminal is running away) then you lose the right to shot. Now what should have happened is that when they went to investigate the glass breaking someone should have thought to grab either a handgun or a shotgun. Now if they do catch them I think that NC law does allow them to charge them with murder.
