Man Finds Grenade In Backyard

A Rocky Mount man got more than he bargained for when he was cleaning his yard Thursday afternoon.

Police say he found a rusty hand grenade lying near a pine tree in the backyard of 1020 Hill Street. The man picked it up and could not determine if it was real or fake.

An SBI bomb squad was called in and removed the grenade from the area. So far there's no word whether the grenade was real or fake.

Well? Did it have a blasting cap when the top was screwed off?

Most all of them are real. Some have just been deactivated. He could have unscrewed the fuse, and looked to see if there was any explosive material inside. Also, they usually cut the end off the fuse mechanism when they are deactivated. If the safety pin and the spoon were gone it was probably a dud.

I found a grenade in my pants this morning. Note to self - don't follow taco bell's suggestion of having a fourth meal at 12am
