More people will soon be out of work in a county with the second highest unemployment rate in the state.
Cox Enterprises announced it has sold Saving Source Direct, a Tarboro-based business. A press release from Cox says the sale will move the company's operations to Alabama.
Saving Source Direct is the company that mails coupons to more than 17 million homes in 26 states. The sale is scheduled to close on Tuesday, May 26.
Affected employees at the Tarboro plant are being offered severance pay, benefits continuation and career transition services.
Saving Source Direct employs about 70 full-time and part-time employees.
Cox is also trying to sell some its newspapers, which include the Daily Reflector in Greenville, the Rocky Mount Telegram and the Daily Advance in Elizabeth City.
The unemployment rate for March in Edgecombe County is a staggering 16.3%. The only county who has a higher rate than that is Scotland County, with 16.6% unemployment.
