A veteran prosecutor in Eastern Carolina says he will retire at the first of the month.
Howard Boney has served as D.A. for the 7th Prosecutorial District for the past 31 years. The district makes up Nash, Edgecombe and Wilson counties.
Boney was appointed district attorney by then Governor Jim Hunt in 1978 and was last re-elected in 2006 to another four year term.
During his tenure, the prosecutors office staff has grown from 5 to 41people.
It will be up to Governor Beverly Perdue to appoint to new district attorney until the seat's next election in 2010.
