Taking weapons and drugs off the streets is a continuous battle for any police force.

With the help of the federal government, the Rocky Mount Police Department announced during a press conference Wednesday, they're beginning to make an impact.

The Rocky Mount Police Department said Wednesday afternoon they have put sixteen criminals behind bars in crimes connected with guns.

Since last year, the Rocky Mount Police Department have joined forces with the United States Attorney's Office in a program called project safe neighborhoods.

Hours before the press conference, police say they made five arrests during what they call a round-up Wednesday morning.

Rocky Mount Police Chief, John Manley, says they will continue their zero tolerance attitude to take criminals with guns off the streets.

Manley says they will be conducting more round-ups within the next few months with the hope to make several arrests.

The U.S. Attorney's office for Eastern North Carolina say they will continue to operate with state and local agencies.
