Community colleges are reporting spikes in enrollment as the economy struggles. Now the state legislature is considering a bill to bring a lot more money to specific programs in community colleges.
The N.C. House of Representatives is considering a bill to more than double the amount of money community colleges get for technical education programs. The bill would funnel $4.5 million dollars to technical education programs at community colleges in the 2009-2010 school year, and $9.1 million in 2010-2011.
Rep. Marian McLawhorn, a democrat from Pitt County, and Rep. Joe Tolson, a democrat from Edgecombe and Wilson Counties, are primary sponsors of the bill.
