FEMA says four more Eastern Carolina counties have been named major disaster areas after flooding caused by last month's heavy rains.
Pitt, Jones, Pender and Brunswick counties have joined Beaufort, Bertie, Craven, Hertford, Onslow and Tyrrell counties which received the designation last week.
That means homeowners and renters who received damage can receive grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not met by insurance or other assistance programs. FEMA also says low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration are available to cover residential and businesses losses not fully compensated by insurance.
Affected residents and business owners in the newly designated counties may apply for assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free registration number, 800-621-FEMA (3362)/TTY 800-462-7585 with speech and hearing disabilities. The registration lines are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., local time.
Four FEMA disaster recovery centers are now open in the East, two more are expected to open on Monday.
It was weeks ago when heavy rains flooded hundreds of homes in the east causing major damage.
Friday centers opened in Craven County at 411 Craven St. and in Bertie County at 103 W. School St.
Saturday centers opened in Tyrrell Co. at 906 Hwy 64 E and in Onslow Co. 1180 at Commons Dr. North.
Centers are also set to open in Beaufort County at 249 N. Market St. on Monday, and in Hertford County at 301 W. Tryon St.
FEMA Officials will be at these centers to help those who were impacted by the flooding. They will help to provide grants for
temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans, and other programs to help residents recover from the disaster.
