Woman Dies At PCMH, Boyfriend Charged With Murder

A Duplin County man has now been charged with murder after deputies say his live-in girlfriend died from a beating.

Jesus Cortez was originally charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill. Deputies say Leota Chaney of Tapp Farm Road had been taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital on Monday by Cortez. The 45-year-old woman had severe head trauma and transported to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where she died the next day.

Deputies say after going to the crime scene it was clear that a struggle had happened and there was a large amount of blood throughout the home.

The 44-year-old Cortez is being held without bond at the Duplin County jail.

Why are you spouting off about tax payers picking up the tab? Why do you assume that this woman does not have health insurance? Let us get really technical this morning... unless you are of Native American decent, your ancestors are "illegals". Europeans sailed across the ocean, stole their land, used propaganda to promote their "savage" nature, and then so "graciously" set them up on reservations. No where in this article does it state that either persons mentioned were here illegally. Don't post that uneducated fodder up here, write your congressmen.

I am deeply offended by several of these postings. First and foremost, it does not matter if the man is legal or illegal..he committed a crime and should be punished. Secondly, I can not believe!!! anyone thinks that her "provoking" him would even be reason enough for him to do what was done to her....these two people suffered from being alcoholics and were a mismatch from the start. I would like to point out..that he was HER live-in boyfriend..not the other way around...his name never is/was on any of the bills or lease agreements.

Thanks clearsome. So the man is an American from Texas. If he is guilty and could be sent back to Texas, he would be in serious peril. However, he committed the crime here, so...

Leota "Tonie" Cheney was one of my bestfriend's from childhood and to have someone to take here life away so tragically has made me sick to my stomach. She was my sister of another color and she saw or met no strangers. When a friend of mine came and told me what happened to her and cried, cried, cried. Why did this happened to Tonie? I don't care where this person is from I hope he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Her children will never get to hug her, her mother will never get to kiss her, her brother and sister will never get to say "I love you" and her grandfather will never get to talk with her. Tonie I will never forget you and will always remember the good times we shared at your grandparents house. Rest in Peace my friend until we see each other again.
