A Deep Run man is dead after troopers say his pickup truck hit a patch of black ice Thursday morning in Duplin County.
The Highway Patrol says the crash happened around 9:00 a.m. on Highway 11 outside of Pink Hill, just inside Duplin County.
Troopers say the driver of a Chevy S-10 pickup was driving too fast for conditions when he hit black ice and lost control. His pickup went sideways into the other lane and was hit by another oncoming pickup truck. Troopers say the driver of the first truck, 65-year-old Michael Waller, was killed. They say the other driver, 52-year-old Danny Steele of Wilmington, was not injured.
There have been numerous other accidents on Highway 11 because of snow and ice. In Deep Run three different wrecks closed down the road for a while at the Southwest Creek bridge near South Lenoir High School.
