Highway Patrol has identified the driver killed in the crash Thursday afternoon in Jones County.
The crash happened around 12:45 p.m. just south of Pollocksville.
The Highway Patrol says it was a head-on accident between a station wagon and a pickup truck.
The pickup truck driver was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, while the other driver was trapped in the station wagon and died at the scene.
That driver has been identified as 56-year-old Kim Walton Westbrooke of Jacksonville.
A truck driver says he was following the Subaru out of Jacksonville and it was driving very erratically. He was able to get around the station wagon in Maysville and then slowed down, flashing his lights to oncoming traffic.
The trucker says he then saw the crash in his rear view mirror.
Troopers say they received a call about an erratic driver on the highway, but before they could get there another call came in about the head-on crash.
Troopers say they do not know why the Westbrooke was driving erratically.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
