Eastern Carolina Mail To Raleigh Under USPS Proposal

The U.S. Postal Service is considering whether to eliminate all mail processing in Eastern Carolina, and instead move all that to Raleigh.

That would mean mail sorting operations in Kinston, Rocky Mount and Fayetteville would close. The proposal is part of a study the Postal Service unveiled today to streamline operations to help the struggling agency save money.

The Kinston processing center, which employs about 100 people, had already been under consideration for closure. The Postal Service was wanting to move that operation to Fayetteville. Now the agency will study whether it is feasible to process all mail in the area in Raleigh.

The study is expected to be completed early next year. The Postal Service says during the past five years total first class mail has dropped by 25%.
