Local Boy Who Appeared On "Today" Comes To WITN Sunrise Show

Lukas Brown, a seven year old from Duplin County, captured national attention when he appeared on NBC's "Today Show" in December.

Lukas and his mom were in New York in December when Al Roker asked if Lukas was okay. Lukas made a comment about needing a heater and ended up inside on the sofa with Meredith and Matt, where he showed off his rapping skills and his wonderful personality.

Wednesday, Lukas joined Heather King and Jim Howard on WITN News at Sunrise. Lukas told them about how his life has changed since his brush with fame on "Today." He showed off his signed batting gloves from his favorite player on the New York Yankees, Curtis Granderson. Lukas will soon be headed to visit the Yankees at spring training in Florida.

Since appearing on the "Today Show," Lukas also had major eye surgery at Duke in Durham. Lukas was born with severe loss of vision on one eye and moderate loss in the other. Lukas was diagnosed with Strabismus, a disorder in which the eyes do not line up in the same direction when focusing. Due to the loss of vision Lukas was also diagnosed with Amblyopia. That occurs when the brain and eyes do not work together properly.

The Brown Family hopes that the surgery in December will be the last one he needs to have. He'll visit Duke next week to see how his eye is doing.

Lukas is also a budding rapper. He performed on Wednesday, rapping all the books of the Bible.

Previous Story, from December 2010:

A local second grader is now a local celebrity after his impromtu appearance on the Today Show last week.

Seven-year-old Lukas Brown of Duplin County, and his mom Phyllis, were in New York for their annual trip when Al Roker asked Lukas if he was o.k. Lukas replied "If I had a heater I would". That's when Roker brought him inside to meet Meredith, Matt and Ann as a guest on the show.

We caught up with Lukas and his mom Monday at Chinquapin Elementary School to hear how he made his national TV debut. Lukas said, "Well, he asked me are ya alright, and I said if I had a heater and he started laughing and carried me inside." Mom Phyllis says, From there he got invited into the green room and met the producer and then went up and sat with Matt, Al, Ann and Meredith.

Lukas also did some impromptu rapping on the Today Show. He says, "I could see myself rapping and country music and my name would be Bling-Bling."

Lukas, sporting that blue toboggan with his name embroidered on it, was also a hit, so his mother says they've made personalized blue toboggans for Matt, Al, Ann, and Meredith.

A 7-year-old boy from Eastern Carolina stole the show this morning on NBC's Today Show, telling Al Roker he was cold standing outside.

The boy, Lukas Brown, from Chinquapin was in New York with his mother. During an outside weather update, he told Roker that he would have been a lot happier if he had a heater.

Moments later the child showed up sitting on the couch in between Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira.

Luke told Matt & Meredith that some of his favorite sights seen so far in New York have been the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. The seven year old also told them he had been on the Martha Stewart Show the day before, leading Meredith to exclaim "Boy you get around!".

Luke then did a little beatboxing on live network television.

Luke is in the second grade at Chinquapin Elementary School. While standing outside on the Plaza, his mom held a large sign that read: "Please excuse Lukas from school today at Chinquapin Elementary School in NC." His principal, Pamela Jenkins, says his absence is excused. She says staff had watched the clip several times online Thursday morning and even showed it to Luke's classmates. Principal Jenkins said his Today Show experience was "typical Lukas."
