University Health Systems' lease agreement got the thumbs up Tuesday night from the hospital board at Beaufort County Medical Center. UHS already runs several hospitals in Eastern Carolina. Amanda Paul visited Duplin General Hospital, one of the facilities UHS manages.
Duplin General Hospital, signed a lease agreement with UHS in October 2010. Previously, UHS managed the hospital. but since the new lease some in the community say there have been minor, positive changes like a shorter wait time and improved customer service.
Doctors have already been added to the staff and plans are to add 6-8 more.
Sandra Reynolds brought her grandfather to Duplin General Tuesday after he suffered a stroke even though he was resistant at first.
"He had I guess a bad past experience, but after me telling him about the new stroke team being here and a little convincing from me and the EMT staff in the ambulance he decided to come here because.... for a local hospital- to us living about 15 minutes away, its one of the best hospitals close to us," said Reynolds.
Duplin General Hospital's Director of Marketing Laura Maready says University Health Systems helped secure its future, and provides job security for employees.
UHS runs 8 hospitals in Eastern Carolina. Beaufort County Medical Center would make 9. County commissioners still have to approve the BCMC lease agreement.
