16-year-old Francisco Zuncin, known as "Chico" to his friends, died in a two vehicle crash.
Troopers say Zuncin and three friends were traveling on Outlaws Bridge Road, when the driver failed to yield and pulled out onto Highway 111 in front of a pickup truck. The truck crashed into the car and Zuncin was killed. The three others in the car were hospitalized.
Zuncin was one of eight children. Zuncin's brother, Carlos Mendez, was one of the first on scene and describes the horrifying experience. He told WITN, "They called me and I mean I was there. I tried to get him out, I was like 'Chico, Chico, wake up, wake up.' He wouldn't wake up."
Zuncin was a member of the East Duplin High School soccer team.
A fundraiser was held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday night at the High School. Organizers say they received over $8,000 dollars. They say that money will go towards helping the family with funeral expenses and helping the other victims in the hospital with their medical bills.
The Highway Patrol says a 16-year-old was killed in a wreck Friday morning in Duplin County. The family of the teen killed, Francisco Zuncin, is planning a funeral fundraiser for him Saturday according to Zuncin's soccer coach Matthew Carter who says he was a junior at East Duplin High School.
Troopers say at 9:18 a.m. Friday Zuncin was a passenger in a car on Outlaws Bridge Road, and the driver failed to yield when he pulled out onto NC Highway 111in front of a pickup truck. Zuncin was killed, and the 20-year-old driver, and other 13 and 14 year old passengers in the 2002 Toyota Celica were taken to the hospital. Troopers say the driver of the truck that hit the car suffered minor cuts. Trooper J.D. Edwards says charges are pending.
Carter tells WITN the teens and young man in the car were headed to a friend's house to help him move. He says Zuncin was known as "Chico," has 8 siblings, and the family can not afford funeral expenses so a memorial fundraiser will be held in the gym of East Duplin High School from 6-8pm Saturday.
