Driver, Boy's Mother Facing Charges In Hit And Run That Killed Duplin County Toddler

The woman troopers say hit a toddler with her car in Duplin County in May and left the accident scene is now facing charges as well as the mother of the child.

The Highway Patrol says Michelle Merritt of Mt. Olive is charged with misdemeanor hit and run, while the boy's mother, Delmi Garcia, is facing a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

21-month-old Ismael Aleman was killed when he ran out into Garner Chapel Road in front of his home in May in Duplin County. Troopers say Merritt didn't stop for the accident. She reported stopping at a stop sign and checking her car for damage, and seeing none, she drove away. Troopers said she was very remorseful when she learned she had hit a child who later died.

Merritt has worked in the Duplin County Schools Child Nutrition department since 2006.

Merritt is due in court September 16, while Garcia has yet to be served with her arrest warrant.
