Deputy Injured After Chase Through Cemetery

A Jones County deputy was injured while trying to arrest a combative drug suspect during a chase through a cemetery Monday night.

Captain Justin Elmer says a deputy stopped Kenno Smith of Kinston after the man was seen swerving down a road on his bicycle. Elmer says the deputy found crack and a pipe on the man and as he was about to hand it to another deputy, Smith knocked it out of the deputy's hand and took off running. During the subsequent arrest, one deputy was injured by another deputy's tactical baton.

Elmer says then at the jail, Smith threw himself on the floor, hitting his head on some equipment.

Both the deputy and Smith were taken to the hospital to be checked out. The deputy will be back on duty tonight while Smith is in jail on a $10,000 bond. He's charged with felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, resting delaying and obstructing and officer and assault on a government official.

Yes, Tim Corey worked for the LC jail and he was fired because he used excess force towards the inmate, I wonder if JCSD does back ground checks, this is a serious issue and than someone hires him as a deputy, given him the chance to say "the criminal fell and hit his head" yeah right!

How about thanking the deputys for getting this little thug and not worry about how they did it or the mistake they made. Good job guys, thanks for getting him off the streets.

Here's the rest of the story guys.. It was dark, during the chase they dropped their flashlights, and when the deputy was pulling out his ASP baton is when the other deputy got hit.. so don't make us sound like a bunch of idiots or "clumsy" deputies..

The picture I keep getting in my head is way too funny. Sounds like clumsy is the word of the day.

Maybe it was dark and maybe, just maybe, people do are not stationary during a fight. Of course, you would know that if you had ever been involved in a physical altercation.

Walk a Mile in a Law Enforcement Officers shoes, then make a comment. You don't have a clue. You couldn't hack it.
