DEPUTIES: Man Attacks Elderly Mom With Ax

A Jones County man is accused of trying to kill his elderly mother with an ax.

It started around 8:40 a.m. on Highway 41, west of Comfort, when deputies say Alberta Waters got a phone call from her son who threatened to kill her.

Deputies say 57-year-old Daniel Waters came to the woman's house, hit her door with the ax, and then chased the 80-year-old woman to her neighbor's home. While deputies were en route, another caller said Waters was behind the home, breaking out glass doors and trying to get in.

Waters was found outside of his nearby home and had to be tasered after deputies say he failed to comply to their orders.

Waters is charged with attempted first degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, felony breaking or entering, communicating threats, resisting public officer and two counts of injury to real property. His bond was set at $505,000.

Deputies say he apparently was upset that his father recently left the home and its possessions to his mother, and not him.

I agree. If the man has a mental issue then besides just locking Him up and not addressing it, take care of it. However, this does not excuse Him from doing what He did. There is a train of thought for everything done. Some need some help and others need love.

NO. What he needed was the family to be armed who's home he was trying to break in to with the ax and a bullet sent his way with the address forehead wrote on it.

@Diana and others: It's so easy for you all to say lock him up and throw away the key but I know this family personally and he suffers from Mental Illness! He is in jail now to keep him from harming himself or other family but this is not the solution! He needs to be Assessed and provided with round-the-clock care in a Mental Institution that will address his issues! It would be nice for people to think before they speak or at least get more insight on the story before posting negative and hurtful comments...put yourself in the family's shoes! How would you feel? Something to think about!!!!!!

If he is given the chance to get out, who's to say his mother will be alive. He has lost his mind, and needs to be in an institution of some type, and never allowed to see his mother again. He had to be on something that altered his thinking. This is just CRAZY !!!!!!

Dear judge of this case, if this is not his first time that he has tried to kill his mom, how many more times are you all going to give him? He'll probably succeed one day, you know!!!!!

Whew! I couldn't ever do anything like to my mother! I love her dearly! This man/monster is insane, or he wouldn't have tried something so horrific! He hit his mother on the back of her shoulder with the blunt end!

Daniel Waters just got released from prison and he IS mentally unstable. The problem in a situation such as this is: Law Enforcement does their job, but the court system does not. Your legislators are making easier and easier to get probation rather than incarceration on many crimes due to the state budget problems. I say build more prisons and start making them places people don't want to go and you might see some turn around. These days, inmates live better than anyone that is homeless. They get medical care that even I cannot afford, three nutritional meals a day, a bed, heat and air conditioning, television, no bills, a variety of weights for lifting, other recreation items...do you get my point?!?!? I KNOW they get this stuff as I have worked at a prison in the past.

I agree with this comment, just lock him up and throw the darn key away. The laws are getting way toooooo lax. I have had the opportunity to visit peole that are incarcerated, and they have it alot better than we do. NO worries about a car or gas to go in it, medical care, food, medical care or what to do, because the have EVERYTHING THEY NEED AND THEN SOME !!!!
