A business man is accused of fraud and now faces charges.
Sidney Metts Jr., age 50 of New Bern, was arrested Friday.
The Jones County Sheriff's Office reports they began an investigation of Metts, a contractor, in August.
Officials say a Jones County couple reported Metts, whose business is Sid Metts Contract and Design, intended to defraud them when he entered a contract with them and caused them to lose thousands of dollars.
Metts is charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and failure to work after being paid. We were unable to reach Metts by telephone today.
Officials report Metts has also done business under the names M&M Marble Tile and Granite and Sid Metts Wood Tile & Granite.
From the Jones County Sheriff's Office: "Consumers need to be aware of fraud by contractors, relating to cost and installation fees for all services or products promised to be delivered. Actual, detailed written contracts which state purpose, scope and cost of installation and or repairs should be agreed to by both the contractor and the consumer. Consumer fraud is a national epidemic, especially at a time when many are under economic hardship. The sayings, "Let the buyer beware" and "If it sounds to good to be true" hold true in most cases."
The Jones County Sheriff's Office asks anyone else who might have "fallen victim to such fraud or who has information concerning the above named defendant" to contact them.
