SHERIFF: Fighting Dogs Found In Duplin County

Authorities say they have broken up a dog fighting operation in northern Duplin County.

Sheriff Blake Wallace says thirty-three Pit Bulls, which were used for dog fighting, were seized Tuesday morning. Wallace says several other dogs were found dead at the home on Buck Hill Road, that's outside of Mount Olive.

Charged with possession of fighting dogs is 76-year-old Harry Hargrove, who Wallace says lives at the home.

Deputies also seized treadmills they say were used to condition the dogs for fighting.

Authorities say an anonymous tip lead them the house and they've been investigating the operation for several weeks.

I am glad to see so many people know so much about something they know so little about. The law Apr 20 11:52 you are correct in your statement except for the dogs not having the an option. They can decide not to fight and many have done so. They are some individuals that may kill them, but not all. My concern is that people often stereo type when they have no idea about what goes on. It is still illegal to participate with this activity and you should be punished accordingly. However, an animals life is no more valuable than a humans life. However, a dogs life is no more valuable than a humans life. In our society it appears that you get punished more severe for an animal than a human.

Not only can "he" be charged under felony Animal Abuse, anyone that was at the scene of these fights can be charged as well. Owning equiptment used for the purpose of training an animal for fighting (dog, chicken, whatever) is also a felony. Many of the meds used to treat these animals prior to, or, after a fight is also a felony. The breed of dog is not the issue, since there are other breeds that are also used for this purpose. As for the fights involving people (UFC, boxing etc...), a person has the ability to leave the fight or can even refuse to fight, the dogs don't have that option. It's fight or be killed, or fight and possibly be killed. Either way, they fight to please their owner, this is what pleases the owner so thats what they do, even though it may cost them their own lives. A dog is devoted and loyal to their owner at all cost. Yes, some of these dogs are treated better that the family members, but only because the owner makes money off of the suffering of the dog.

First let me say that I love the pitbull breed, they are a wonderful dog in the hands of the right kind of people. I know the truth of the dog fighting world because I was previously married to some one involved in it and the truth is...IT'S A HORRIBLE, DISGUSTING WAY TO TREAT AN ANIMAL! I've been to Mr. Hargrove's home and I've seen for myself what him and those associated with him do to these dogs. So those of you defending him and making excuses for these acts really need to stop because there is no excuse for doing these sorts of things. You call this a sport...this is not a sport this is done purely for money. I'm glad they busted him and hope they bust a lot more of the "Harry Hargroves" that are out there, because there's more than just dog fighting going on with people like this, there is violence and drugs as well...I know because I've seen it and lived in fear of it when I was married to my ex-husband. These kind of people need to be locked up!

For the Anonymous Apr19 3:00, to make sure that you understand, because of the fear that you have to put a name for yourself. The educational level seems to higher than yours. It has been shown over and over that you are uneduacated of the breed and the man. I guess you find it ok to have two men in the ring beating the crap out of one another. Also, Critter Lover, what were you doing while that man was defending our country that gives you the right to have the freedom of speech?

Dog fighting is illegal and it doesn't matter whether Harry is a good man or not. What he is doing is wrong and illegal. What part of this don't you understand? He doesn't treat his dogs don't understand what it means to treat a dog good or you wouldn't be fighting them or condoning him.

Let us examine: "I just Want to thanks all the people that are supporting harry...which would explain why they all wanted to be pet instead of have treats because it was made shure every dog.... And this is a reflection of the educational level of those who support animal cruelty. Apparently we do need an "Anti-Aniimal Cruelty" campaign in schools these days.

Dear Lord, the ignorance from "folks who know him" astounds me...I guess the old saying about bird of a feather still rings true.
